Founded in 2012, SMART Photonics has positioned itself in the photonic ecosystem as an independent Indium Phosphide foundry with a large focus on product development. Due to its close relation with the Technical University of Eindhoven, SMART Photonics is able to use the latest technological developments, making it one of the front runners in the photonics industry.
SMART Photonics’ ambition is to be the leading independent foundry for photonic integrated circuits, facilitating over the entire photonic development cycle, ranging from early development to mass production.
Photonic circuits are closely related to electronic circuits, using photons instead of electrons to convey signals. Although photonic systems have been around for quite some time, only recently the development of photonic circuits has accelerated, opening a large new range of applications, ranging from next generation low-power consumption data-centers to a variety of sensing applications for structural monitoring and medical diagnostics. Photonic circuits also play an increasingly important role in the aircraft industry, air quality monitoring, autonomous driving and in ultra-secure cryptography.
